- The town of Sighetu Marmaţiei is documentarily attested in the year
1326, and as a city in the year 1352. The name ”Sighet” comes from the
root "Zeget", which belongs to the Thraco-Dacian substrate of the
Romanian language and means "fortified settlement". For
centuries, the people of Maramureş have been gravitating from all the
valleys towards Sighet, the settlement knowing a development over time
as a regional capital.
- The Capital of historical Maramureș for
over six centuries, the town of Sighet has traces of human life dating
from the Upper Palaeolithic (10000 BC), the Neolithic, the Bronze and
Iron Age. The settlement on the
Solovan Hill from the Bronze Age proves that the town's territory has
been continuously inhabited by human communities from ancient times
- Situated at the
confluence of Tisa, Iza and Ronișoara rivers, the town of Sighetu
Marmaţiei polarized economically and administratively the Maramureş
region. Throughout history,
alongside Romanians, Hungarian, German, but also Ukrainian and Jewish
guests settled in the town and in the area.
the second half of the 19th century, the town benefits from the
progress of the modern economy, and rapidly develops, until the
beginning of the First World War.
